Mat.Works Completes Huddersfield Shopping Centre Installation in Frameworks
Mat.Works Completes Huddersfield Shopping Centre Installation in Frameworks
Installation :- Huddersfield imperial arcade shopping centre
Product:- Frameworks with rubber inserts and Platoon Brush
Area:- Outside entrance – uncovered
This complicated job required an advanced solution.
The outside uncovered entrance area meant that the risk of slip was great to incoming customers and outgoing. The solution would need to include not only an entrance mat that could prevent slips but also scrape dirt and moisture from the soles of feet to protect the delicate, shopping centre floors.
Matworks provided Frameworks as a solution, modified to a bespoke fit to include rubber inserts with Platoon Brush to scrape away dirt and moisture. The frameworks range is exceptionally flexible and can incorporate a number of other Matworks ranges to suit any difficult specification.
With MATWORKS flooring solutions they have minimised their risk to slip and fall across the arcade area.
Master matting were the installers on the project and had to overcome a number of installation issues including breaking out the existing terrazzo and replacing old Victorian access grates with a bespoke aluminium tray to take away excess moisture.

Safety First in Entrance Matting!
The importance of Health and Safety when it comes to floor design …
Slips and trips account for the highest number of major injuries in the workplace. Unsurprisingly, the HSE’s more aggressive stance on offenders – with increased prosecutions reflects the severity of the situation. The HSE’s slips and trips programme aims to cut major injury accidents , casued by slips and trips by 10% by 2010! It estimates that last year alone , around two thirds of the 11,000 major injuries that occurred in the workplace were caused by slips and trips – with half of these down to bad housekeeping.
A key piece of advice from the HSE is that employers arm themselves with the right information when sourcing products to suit their needsand which meet the HSE standards. Manufacturers are legally bound to provide accurate descriptions of their products it is iften maintenance staff that fail to keep floors clean which in turn casue major accidents.
The HSE champions to main types of tests for floor safety becuase they can be undertaken on site. Ther German ramp test resulting in R ratings only gives a post factory rating and the HSE has recognised that it is often the ongoing soiling which casues the problem rather than the intrinsic properties of the material itself.
The surface roughness test, which measures the depth of trough vs height of peak in a floor covering over a specified distance and the pendulum test, which measures the speed of movement of a calibrated arm across the surafce , can and has been used to prosecute offending operators and aid slip accident victims in pursuing their claims through the courts. The roughness of a floor surface is measured in millionths of a metre, so even a thin layer of contaminant can severely compromise performance.
However, no matter how good the flooring surface performance may be compromised by the way it is treated and maintained. Facility owners must be educated in their responsibilities and shown how to clean and maintain safety flooring. This is particularly apparent in areas such as kitchens where oil and water spillagee are most likely to occur.
The HSE believes that operators and bunsinesses haven’t always taken slip hazards seriously enough. This has led to poor management control. MatWorks helps customers by making sure they have all the information they need to ensure slip hazards are minmised and included as part of our health and safety process. ALl Matworks products have full certification to back up their slip-resistance claims , as well as specific installation and maintenance guidance.
A common misconception is that rough , slip resistant floors are inevitably harder to clean. This isn’t neccessarily true provided the correct procedures and cleaning products recommended by the manufacturer are used regularly.
Nonetheless, a permanent powder coated surface with a rough slip resistant toppping such as a primary mat coupled with a secondary matting system can make a huge difference and cut costs of maintenance and litigation.
As organisations increasingly turn to safety flooring to demonstrate their compliance with the HSE’s inititatives, it is important to ensure cleints do not over specify the flooring. The flooring should suit the environment, and a clear understanding of use and risks posed is essential so that we can offer the best advice.

AHCP meeting for the Healthcare Industry and Great Success!!
AHCP meeting for the Healthcare Industry and Great Success!!
- Russell Mann Mat-Works Area Sales Manager Provides a blog on his meeting with healthcare professionals in the AHCP group – including who has the dirtiest hands!-

I met up with my colleagues, Andy Gordon and John Jackson in Glasgow to visit the AHCP (Association of Healthcare Cleaning Professionals) Conference & Exhibition which was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel during the first week of June.
As a previous sponsor member of the organization dating back farther than I chose to remember, I had an idea what the event would deliver and the potential from Matworks’s perspective with regard to presenting our products and services to the healthservice sector.
One of those previous encounters involved the ADM exhibition held in Fulham in 1989 when most of the delegates, exhibitors spent several hours in the local wine bars and pubs due to a bomb scare at the hotel. At that time I don’t remember coffee being freely available in such hostelries so it was a long day!
Back to the present day and this exhibition was professional presented and the whole event was efficient and streamlined but still friendly and it was still good to see some old, sorry familiar, faces!
Penny Harrison was our first point of contact and we discussed the agenda for the day and what we could expect from our visit. After then there were a continuous line of face to face meetings with important delegates and exhibitors and brief discussions with people such as Christine Behrendt (Southern branch), Simon Sharpe (Midlands), Julie Turner & Enid Hodgson (North Western) as well as Penny Purdam from the Education, Training & Development team and not forgetting Delia Cannings, Alaco Millard and Pauline Barker from Matthew Boulton College.
Within a month of the exhibition Matworks became Gold Sponsor Members of the AHCP and we look forward to developing a relationship with all the branches and introducing our comprehensive range of matting solutions over the coming months and years.
We also look forward to attending next year’s conference at Bristol where we can participate as exhibitors and not just as visitors in what we feel will be another eventful occasion.
Addendum
The branch meeting initiation ceremony
I attended the combined branch meeting for the Midlands and Southern area’s which was held at Kingswinford in the West Midlands in July.
There was a good turnout in excess of 20 people and we one of the presentations was by a company who were able to demonstrate the cleanliness of surfaces by taking a swab and delivering a record within 20 seconds.
It was suggested that someone should volunteer to have a swab of their hand and I was duly volunteered by Andrew Henman and Roy Seymour and they restrained me whilst the tests were taken the result was unfortunate! Other tests were taken and I was leading (losing) for a lengthy period of time until another individual overtook me( no names, no pack drills but he works for Rotawash!)
